If I were to ask you what a reeded baluster leg is, would you be able to point one out to me in The Old Cinema? How about spotting the difference between a Davenport and a Bureau, or what Coromandel is? Not to worry if you don't, as all will be revealed in the Antique Alphabet, a mini series we cooked up to shed some light on the world of Antiques.  Each post will follow the alphabet and focus on a few items from the antiques world that correspond with each letter.

Most agree that an antique is any item at least 100 years old and made with skilled hands. which now includes items up to 1910. The items value is dependent on its' maker,  materials used, level of attention to details, and rarity. We carry items as old as the mid 18th century (around 1770), and the craftsmanship that went into some of these pieces is incredible.  Prices are at their lowest in years for antiques, so now is the time to buy.

Bow Fronted Chest:
Extremely popular in Georgian and early Victorian times, bow fronted chests of drawers are easily recognized by their curved front and simple features. Because of their practicality, they are still very popular. They are generally made of mahogany and lined with either mahogany, oak or pine. Some have simple inlay details surrounding the drawers as well.

Burr Woods:
Burred  (or burled in America) wood is a deformity in the tree that is easily spotted by large amounts of knots, or burrs. It is often found in woods such as Maple, Yew, Walnut, and Amboyna, and used as a veneer on valuable pieces of furniture. Due to the rarity of finding burred woods, prices are often very high. Below are a few items in our shop that have burred wood applied to them.

Coromandel Wood:
A rare and exotic wood found in parts of Asia that consists of  both naturally occurring light and dark tones. It was mainly reserved for use on small antique items such as jewelry boxes. We currently have this stunning late Victorian model in the shop.

Card Table:

Card tables date back from the early 18th century, and make a regular appearance in our shop. They are sometimes mistaken for console tables as they generally fold in half for ease of storage. The tabletop generally rotates sideways to reveal storage space for cards, poker chips and other items used during game play (a bottle of whisky would fit nicely when turned on its side!).

I will be continuing the series throughout the new year and I hope you enjoy some hopefully newfound knowledge!

Come and join us next Thursday 16th December for Mulled Wine and a brilliant acoustic performance by local singer songwriter Stanley Moon!  The store will be open until 9pm, drinks served from 5pm.

See you then!

We are proud to announce the arrival of Lucy Turner at The Old Cinema!  Lucy takes a fresh and inspiring approach by creating her own designs on formica and applying them to original pieces of mid-century furniture. The finished result is a perfect balance of contemporary and retro. You can see more of Lucy's pieces in the shop and on her website.  She has recently received high praise from Living Etc and Elle Decoration for her creative upcycling, and we are delighted to have her work on display - come and see it for yourself!

Get ready to brace yourself for the cold winter ahead.  Snow is about to hit Scotland and North-east England, soon to be heading our way.  I'm absolutely gagging for it to come and have checked various weather forecasts (you have to check more than one if the first doesn't give you the news you want to hear) for the last 5 days.  I know for a fact that I'm going to be straight out my front door when the snow reaches London, eager to have a good old play.

At The Old Cinema we've got a great selection of sledges and snow shoes to have some fun with so put on your scarf and gloves, find a hill and see who can get to the bottom first!
If staying inside and keeping out of the cold is more your thing we have plenty of festive goodies for you to take home with you.  I particularly like these toy sacks. They'd look great in a playroom or under the Christmas tree and can be used all year round!
Whatever you end up doing, wrap up warm and have fun!

Sofie here! Well, I must have done OK on my first blog as I've been allowed to do another.  This time I'm having a look at Christmas gifts for the girls.
I found this lovely Nickle Plated Brass Jugendstil jewellery casket - it gets very annoying when you have jewellery but nothing to keep it in!
No worries though, if the lady in question already owns a jewellery box, we've got a vast array of things to fill it with.  I particularly like these necklaces and earrings that have been Upcycled from watch parts.

Now it may come as a surprise to a lot of men reading this but women do appreciate presents that aren't jewellery, especially if its all she's received from you for the last couple of Birthdays and Christmas'. So mix it up a little. We've got plenty of non-glittery gift items that may tickle your fancy...

There's no denying it, living in England, you can be sure that the next few months will be cold, dark and wet. Brighten her day with some great Vintage or Retro lighting!

Another favorite of mine are these cushions. I love the French Grain sack style ones and lets face it, you can't go wrong with a cushion. We've also got cushions made from Vintage materials depending on your taste, as well as plenty of quilts in a variety of styles.
These framed airbrushed advertisement artworks are brilliant and would look good either on their own or as a set depending on which you'd prefer or how much space you have.

Another thing that'd look great around any home are these tin pigs and they're smaller than real pigs so could make an unusual stocking filler!

See you in the shop!

One of our vintage crates was lucky enough to be involved in a photo shoot this week!  It has returned to the shop demanding Evian at room temperature and an hourly re-wax.  Come and take it off our hands this weekend for £38...

Hey Sofie here, I'm writing the first blog post of my internship!  So with Christmas coming up, and being young and female, I'm offering some inspiration on gifts for the men in your life.  Friends, sisters, mothers, daughters, and girlfriends everywhere ask 'What do you want for Christmas?' and get the typical male grunt in response.

I've been rooting around The Old Cinema picking out possible mantique presents and I've come up trumps! Whether he's been naughty or nice, here's some of the things I like.

1950's Cocktail shakers and glasses and Mad Men style tumblers are great for partygoers.  Or, pretend you care about his love for sport and please him with one of our Upcycled sport themed lamps.

For a more antique feel we have an extensive range of Victorian writing boxes, chess sets, and other collectables.  A particular favourite piece of mine is this Bignell Walnut Stationery Cabinet (C.1860)

The selection of Upcycled and vintage cufflinks would make great stocking fillers!
Or if he fancies himself as a rockstar this black globe or a mirror made from a section of a Boeing 737 would be perfect!

As you can see there are plenty of pieces to choose from so use the next 43 days (yes, scary isnt it?) wisely and pop in to The Old Cinema to see what you can find!

A trip to America would not have been possible without something to pack all of the goods in, so we brought back some classic pieces of vintage storage, weathered and aged to perfection. These suitcases, travelling trunks and drinks coolers would look great as part of your next holiday!  A very limited supply of the hand painted union jack military traveling trunks are available, and are ideal for blankets, shoes or whatever you fancy hiding away for the journey ahead.

These aluminium cases by ZERO Halliburton are recognized worldwide as being extremely tough and incredibly stylish. Unfortunately ours don't have £50,000 inside, so you'll have to provide that on your own!

We have a good selection of vintage drinks coolers, including one that is lime green!

This week has been spent unpacking hundreds of  martini glasses, cocktail shakers and what seems to be all of the silver-topped whisky tumblers from the set of Mad Men! The glassware arrived from America last week and will be located in various spots on the ground and first floors this weekend.  The glasses are sold in sets as small as a pair, up to sets of ten or even twelve, and would make an ideal gift for those of you ahead of the Christmas rush. As you can see from the photos below, you are spoilt for choice!

A healthy dose of industrial is on the menu for the weekend, following the arrival of our container.  The majority of the new stock is still pre-restoration, so if you like rust and peeling paint you're in luck!  We also have coke coolers, desk chairs and many more pieces of eye candy dotted around the shop with much more to come!

See you soon!

Check out these vintage chairs reupholstered with a colourful splash of patchwork fabric and trimmings.  The fabric is produced from the remnants of bolts of new fabric, thus saving waste.  The remnants are cut and hand-sewn together to create a bespoke design.  The chairs are midcentury and the fabric swatches limited,  so each is unique.  A stunning upcycled product, not to mention extremely comfortable!  Come in and try one for yourself!

Over the past couple of years our upcycled furniture has become increasingly popular and in response we have been searching for more upcyclers and their products to bring to The Old Cinema.  We have now launched, which features products and ideas sent to us from all over Europe via Twitter and Facebook.  We will collaborate with the best of these with the aim of offering a wide range of re-purposed products which are as environmentally friendly as they are aesthically beautiful!

Upcycled products are made from unwanted or scrap materials that have been restored or reinvented to create an object of greater worth.  This not only saves them from disposal but gives a new lease of life, often with a completely different function from their original use.

We are inviting designers, artists, shops, and students to submit their details and images to  Here are a couple of our recent favourites:
